What is the course, A+ Intro to Computer Repair? A+ Intro to Computer Repair is a Palmdale R.O.P (Regional Occupation Program) course designed with a threefold purpose:
1. To prepare the student for career options in the area of Computer Repair for PC's. 2. To give the student a life-long tool for diagnosing, repairing and building personal computers for professional or personal interests. 3. To provide the student with job skills necessary for technical support and information technology.

What skills will be learned in Intro to Computer Repair? Effective repair and troubleshooting through skills learned on a IBM compatible computer, through classroom participation, through classroom presentations, and through assisting other students. Technological computer troubleshooting; by solving and researching using a variety of programs and hardware tools. Personal safety responsibility and computer well being by using precautions.

Classroom Facilities and Equipment
Computer There are two computers that will be issued to you. One computer will be your lab computer used for projects and practice, the other computer will be a working computer used during operating systems. Two areas in the classroom are for different usage: The classroom will be used for lectures and normal informational topics. Labs will be used to facilitate repairs and troubleshooting. General class schedules will be posted online at the beginning of each week. You and your group partner must work together while in the lab but must each turn in your own quizzes, tests and other written requirements separately.
Notebooks You will be given many handouts (such as this one). This will become our "textbook". These handouts must appear in an organize fashion in your notebooks. The handouts will be numbered for easy organization. Notebooks will be checked periodically and counted for part of your grade. Any handouts missed because of absence or tardiness can be downloaded from the classroom website. Additional resources and extra credit will be posted on the classroom website, it is your responsibility to check the website periodically.
Tools Appropriate tools and materials will be issued to you. This will consist of a tool kit and an anti-static lab coat and software cd. It is your responsibility to bring these to classroom daily as they will be checked and used for a grade. You must bring in your own floppy diskettes to save any information relative to software being used in the classroom.
Class Projects Each unit of Computer Repair is taught the same way. First, we discuss and demonstrate an example of the project, such as installing memory. Then, you produce the exact example so that you understand the concepts of how to install all types of memory. Next, you install and remove memory on different types of machines so as to accumulate this experience. Finally, you make sure the memory works or troubleshoot if it doesn’t. The class projects have two results; the Example must be reproduced exactly as shown when demonstrated to show you have mastered the skills taught. The Practicum must show an ability to take the example and apply it on your own correctly. Both the Example and the Practicum are graded.
Quizzes and Exams There will be quizzes that are both announced and unannounced. There will be exams announced well ahead of time and posted online.
Grades The course is divided into sections or units. There are four of them, two semesters long for 36 weeks total. Mondays and Wednesdays 5:15 – 7:46. They are:
· Intro to Computer Hardware / Systems (9 weeks) First Semester · System Configuration and Management (9 weeks) First Semester · Desktop Operating System (9 weeks) Second Semester · Information Technology (9 weeks) Second Semester
As we progress through each unit, you will be graded on quizzes, exams and completeness of notebooks. Also, you will receive a grade on both the Example and the Practicum for each unit. At the end of the course, you will be graded on your ability to apply everything you have learned. There will be a midterm during the first semester, and a final exam at the end of the second semester. Grades will be posted online by your student ID throughout the semester.
Percent grading: 100% = A Excellent 85% = B Above Average 75% = C Average 65% = D Below Average Below 65% = Failing
Credits The class is a two semester class, 90 unit hours or 36 weeks. You will earn 10 credits.
Classroom Behavior This course is designed to produce more for the student who takes full advantage of the collective knowledge of the teacher and the students participating. Therefore, participation is important. Positive attitudes contribute to group discussions and daily work. Negative attitudes detract from learning and growing. Therefore, negative attitudes will not be tolerated.
Assertive Discipline Plan
Rules
· When the teacher is lecturing, there is no talking among students, when students are presenting their work, no one else is talking; at all times students and teacher will treat each other with respect. · Round table discussions of student work allow for everyone to participate in an orderly and polite manner with respect for the student whose work is being discussed. · No food or drinks are allowed near the computers; however, snacks may be brought into the classroom and eaten at your desks during break. · Absolutely no smoking anywhere in ROP area, this includes inside your card. No solicitation with others during your break while others are in class. · Students must not violate safety rules to yourself and the computes being worked on. · No cell phones during class or in building, they can only be used outdoors. · You are allowed only 10 hours of unexcused absences, excessive tardiness will not be accepted. You parent or guardian can call or send a note for it to be excused. It is your responsibility to sign in when you first walk into class to count for credit.
Consequences
· Verbal warning and or stand up for a period of time · 10-minute class cleanup time · One-hour after-school detention (research) · Removal of student from classroom until parent and administration conference occurs. · The teacher reserves the right to remove anyone from class at any time who is not meeting the high standards of the class. Vocational Education is hands on practice for a professional career and will be treated as such.
