Join with the AV Chambers of Commerce, All Valley Federal Credit Union, other community members, and the AVUHSD to showcase student work with arts, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), or “green/eco” themes. The displays and/or competitions will take place on May 6th, 2012 from 9am to 1pm, in connection with the Chambers’ flea market events.
Teachers from AVUHSD schools will network with others in their industry sectors/subject areas to design and implement a common student class project which can be displayed; school sites may compete against each other to have the work judged as “Best in the AVUHSD,” and first place prizes may be awarded. Displays should include an interactive component for high school students to do a hands-on demo with other youngsters attending the flea market with their families. For examples of past art competitions, visit https://www.avfcu.org/youth#/tab/supporting-our-youth. Other ideas could be an on-site video, design, or painting exercise. Examples of STEM displays or competitions could involve valve cover racers, robotics, solar vehicles or cooking, aircraft/building/bridge design and models, first aid or blood pressure monitoring, or windmill power, among others.
Please invite your students’ families and friends to attend and learn more about your academies and CTE pathways, while having the opportunity to shop at the flea market and enjoy the car show (admission fee required). Please make sure to sign up for a display or competition area early, as spots are on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to register is April 27th, 2012.

As we move into rattlesnake season in the Antelope Valley and the western states, the risk of snake bites grows. Fortunately, while a snake may be hard for you to notice, your pets can detect them from hundreds of feet away. With over 1,300 rattlesnake bites to people in the U.S. in 2007, and the number of bites increasing each year, training your pet to detect and avoid a rattlesnake is especially important. No dogs younger than 4 months of age will be trained.

PAST EVENT: FUNDRAISER: ART REESE
Posted October 28, 2011
Information courtesy of Clyde Merrick, CSEA Chapter 612 President
Good day to one & all…
Today, I come to you as a fellow human, not “The Prez”. I know some are aware of the horrific motorcycle accident our friend, colleague & Bro, Art Reese, was involved in on Tuesday, 18OCT11, on his way home from Eastside’s night shift where he is a night custodian currently. In Art’s honor, Billy Swanson, Jim Stewart & I are organizing a “recovery” run for Veteran’s Day, 11/11/11. That’s a Friday & we don’t work that day! All are welcome & ‘run what ya brung’!! We’re asking for a donation of $30 per person, and $40 per couple as an entry. Any amount is great. We just thought it a good starting point for everyone. If you wanna pay more, great. If that’s a little out of your range, do what you can do. We’re riding/driving to The Red House BBQ joint in Tehachapi where we will have lunch. Lunch will be $14, 20% of which, will be donated back to Art’s cause by the folks that run the joint. Just tell em you’re, “Here for Art!” We’ll have tri-tip, hot links, 2 sides, bread & butter and bottomless non-alcoholic drinks from the machine! This is the best BBQ joint within 100 miles of where any of us live – I guarantee it!!
Art is a very beautiful human being. Just ask anyone that’s had the honor of just talkin to him. You know right then that you’re speaking with a special individual. This is why those that do know Art just want to know where to send their charitable donation. Seriously. It’s been a wonder to observe. There are a lot of other beautiful people out there, too. That’s why Billy, Jim & I thought to do this for Art & his family. Besides, it makes you feel good to help someone that truly could use some help. Please ride/drive with us, Friday, NOVEMBER 11, 2011!!!! It’s for a great cause, and there’ll be a lot of great fellowship!
For those of you who wish to support Art, but do not ride, please send donations and cards to Billy Swanson or Jim Stewart at Eastside High School, please indicate for Arturo Reece Fund. An account will be set up to handle the funds. Or make your check out directly to Arturo Reese and they'll be delivered to him.
The Eastside High Football Team has added a "AR" sticker to their helmets to honor Art at their game, Friday 10/28/11. Such an overwhelming show of support is wonderful!

Spartan Race
Event Date: November 19, 2011
Location: Malibu, CA
Ladies and Gentlemen, I am actively seeking 20 + participants to join us for the November 19, Spartanrace.com event in Malibu, CA. The Spartanrace.com event is three miles of grueling mudslinging obstacle courses for the adventurous runner and not so adventurous runner. The event coordinators have generous rewards for participants, but, most importantly they donate a percentage of the proceeds to helping our troops rehabilitate from the physical and psychological wounds of war.
The last ten years our country has been at war; I have witnessed family and former students serve in our multiple wars. Big brothers/sisters have served in Afghanistan/Iraq and several years later have seen their little brothers and sisters serve in Afghanistan/Iraq and elsewhere. Many of these young men and women have received life threatening injuries and emotional disabilities and SpartanRace.com is a good way to bring awareness and donating for the rehabilitation of our troops.
I have listed the pro's on why you should do it: For a higher cause other than yourself, Do something out of your comfort zone, Looking forward to fitness (relieve stress), Represent our community, Represent our profession, Camaraderie with your colleagues, It will be in Malibu, CA (enough said). Cons: It's going to be physically and mentally challenging.
Please visit www.SpartanRace.com and register under "Spartan Scholars" for the 11:30 a.m. start time. Please contact me eviramontes@avhsd.org if you're going to do it.
So far there are only two of us, we want people that want to join us. We will have a meeting and let's come up with a plan, a team shirt to represent our community we serve, and represent our profession.
Sincerely, Esaul Viramontes

PAST EVENT: Fundraiser Gavin McElroy
Posted November 29, 2011
Information courtesy of Allyson Howard, Teacher, Lancaster High School
CLICK HERE FOR LINK TO ALL FLYERS AND INFO SHEETS
Lancaster High School English teacher Gavin McElroy was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Although he is currently undergoing treatment, he will ultimately need a bone marrow transplant in order to beat the disease. There are about 10,000 people currently waiting for marrow transplants, but only about half will receive them. There is a critical need for marrow donors in order to save the lives of people like Gavin. These patients also often require several blood transfusions as part of their treatment.
In order to serve these needs, Lancaster High School, in coordination with the American Cancer Society Club at Quartz Hill High School, will be hosting a blood drive and bone marrow registrydrive on December 13 from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM in the Lancaster High cafeteria. You can click here register for the blood drive or just come the day of the drive. Please be aware that there has been an overwhelming response, so appointments are recommended.
If you would like tojoin the bone marrow registry, a representative from Be the Match will be at LnHS on December 13 as well. Joining the marrow registry is a quick and easy process, and the representative will have information about the commitment you are making and how marrow donation is done (it's not nearly as scary as it used to be).
If you cannot come to the drive on the 13th, you can register to be a marrow donor through the Be the Match website (promo code FriendsofGavin)--the whole process only takes about 10 minutes. If you are not able to be a marrow donor, but would like to make a donation to support Be the Match, click here and you can make a donation in support of Gavin.
It costs Be the Match around $100 to add a new person to the registry, but they are bringing their services to us for free. We are having several fundraisers to support their work. On December 7 from 5:00-9:00 PM, Vince's Pasta and Pizza at 30th and L has agreed to donate a portion of their proceeds to Be the Match-- - Present the flyer for it!
In addition, after you donate blood, you can grab a meal at Primo Café on Valley Central Way. They will donate a portion of their proceeds all day on December 13 to Be the Match. Just take in the flyer that's attached in the LINK AT THE TOP or pick up a flyer at the drive. In addition, LnHS's Not in Our School Club and QHHS's ACS Club will be hosting a bake sale on December 13 from 2:30 PM - 6:00 PM at the blood drive so you can get your post-donation treat. All proceeds will be donated to Be the Match.
Gavin McElroy is a phenomenal teacher who positively impacts the lives of his students. We have been given the opportunity to impact countless more lives because of him. We hope our community can give back to Gavin the same way he has given to us and our children.
