RECOGNITION BY AND AWARDS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The employee recognition program is established as a way for the Board of Trustees, the Superintendent or designee and co-workers to honor outstanding certificated and classified employee for their service and contributions to the district. Employees are eligible for service awards, or recognition awards in the categories of Special Service and Distinguished Service.

RECOGNITION AND AWARDS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Service Awards
Awards may be presented for service years in the
district for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35+ years as determined appropriate by
the Employee Recognition Committee.
1. A full year of service may be granted for paid status of 75% or more of a
standard school year.
2. Substitute employment is not counted as service credit.
3. Time accrued during inactive status due to unpaid leave, resignation, lay-off or placement on a reemployment list, is recognized as a break in service and will NOT be counted as service credit. Employees must be in paid active status 75% of a standard school year in order to accrue an Employee Recognition Service Year.
4. At the inception of the award program, only the highest service award earned by an individual will be presented.
Presentation of Service Awards
1. 10, 15, and 20 years of service - awards shall be presented by the Superintendent or designee, and/or the President of the Board of Trustees.
2. 25 years of service - awards shall be presented by the Superintendent or designee and or the Board President with group photographs for publication in the newspaper.
3. 30, 35+ years of service - awards shall be presented by the superintendent or designee and/or the Board president, and if possible one or more of the following: Los Angeles County Supervisor, State Senator, Assembly Person, with individual photographs for publication in the newspaper.
Recognition Awards
Employees may be nominated for a recognition award by fellow employees, parents/guardians, or members of the Board. Two types of recognition award will be presented: The Distinguished service Award and the Special Service award.
Distinguished Service Award
An employee must have ten years of service (as recognized by this policy) to qualify for consideration.
1. The nomination of an employee for this award
must be based on one of the following
criteria:

a. Effectiveness with students;
b. Contributions to the profession;
c. Contributions in working with students outside the classroom; or
d. Long-term outstanding contributions to the district.
2. Rules:
a. This award may be received only once by an individual.
b. Presentation of this award shall be on an annual basis.
c. A maximum of four awards may be presented. This is a very special award and requires a unanimous vote of the selection committee to present more than four awards.
3. Awards:
a. An award determined appropriate by the Employee Recognition Committee shall be presented to each individual recipient.
b. Recipients should receive media publicity.
Special Service Award
1. The nomination of an employee for this award must be based on one of the following criteria:
a. Unusual competence, courage or performance in an emergency situation or under unusual difficulties.
b. Original suggestions, developments or major improvements in methods, organization or procedures for their work on a particular project which results in a substantial benefit to the district.
c. Community service may be considered to the extent that it may affect the district.
2. Rules:
a. There is no limit on the number of Special Service awards that may be presented.

b. An employee may receive this award more than once.
c. The Special Service Award should be presented when earned as determined by the committee.
3. Awards:
a. An award determined appropriate by the Employee Recognition Committee shall be presented to each individual recipient.
b. Recipients should receive media publicity.
Selection Committee and Procedures:
1. Composition of Committee: A selection committee representative of the various employee groups may be established to determine recipients of the Distinguished Service Award and Special Service Award from those nominated. The committee may include the following employee groups.
a. Teachers: One from each school;
b. Guidance Counselors;
d. Maintenance/grounds representatives;
e. Clerical representatives;
f. Custodial representatives;
g. Cafeteria representatives;
h. Teacher assistant or aides; and
i. Administrators.
2. An alternate shall be appointed for each seat on the committee. The alternate will only serve if the regular member can no longer serve.
3. Regular committee members will be excused form service on the committee if they are nominated for an award.

4. The term of each committee member shall be two years, except for the initial committee which shall be six two-year terms. This may be waived in the event a site representative is not found.
5. Appropriate supervisors of the positions comprising the committee will be asked to submit the names of several employees he/she would recommend for service on the committee. The Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services or designated liaison will contact the employees to determine their willingness to serve.
6. The Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services
or designated liaison shall be an
ex officio member of the committee and will receive the nominations of behalf
of the committee.
7. The Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services or designated liaison will assign a number to each nomination. Additional information needed concerning nominees will be gathered by the Assistant Superintendent Personnel Services or designated liaison as requested by the committee.
8. Nomination forms will be made available at each switchboard and principals office and at the district Personnel Services Office.
9. Rating forms should be used by the committee to screen nominations.
10. One committee member shall be designated by the committee to serve as publicity liaison with the news media.
Presentation of Awards
1. Presentation of the award may be made by a member
of the Board, the Superintendent or
designee, or by the site principal at a gathering of the recipient’s peers.
2. Suggested occasions for presentation of award include the following:
a. School level staff or faculty meetings;
b. Specially called meeting at the school level;
c. District wide orientation meetings; and
d. Special awards program.
