CALL NUMBERS

TheCALL NUMBER is marked on the spine of every book in the library.
The CALL NUMBER of the book tells you the section where the book is shelved.

001.001 to 999.999

Nonfiction books are marked with Dewey Decimal System numbers. Remember that nonfiction books are about real people and events. Sometimes books about what people from other times believed (like Mythology) are in the nonfiction section.
Also, books that are a serious study of happenings that may or may not be real, like Bigfoot, and Area 51, and other mysteries are placed here.
What Dewey Decimal Numbers mean is explained in the next table.

This means the book is a biography about one person. A biography is the true story of a person's life. The letters KEN are the first 3 letters of the person's last name.
A book with this call number could be about President John F. Kennedy.

This means the book is a Collective Biography about more than one person. The book could be about several presidents, baseball pitchers, scientists, painters, 20th century women, ancient rulers, astronauts, or military leaders, and so on.

Melvil Dewey (1851-1931) was the librarian, educator, and creator of the
Dewey Decimal Classification System. This is a system in which all recorded knowledge is divided into
10 major classes, 000 through 999.
These classes are further divided into subcategories for easy reference and access.

Basics of Understanding LCCN (Library of Congress Call Numbers)

How books are arranged on shelves:
FIRST alphabetically by the classification letters; single letters come before double letters. Thus L comes before LB.

THEN numerically by the classification numbers. Thus, 60 comes before 601.

FINALLY, books within the same class are divided by the cutter (author) number.

The cutter (author) number is a decimal value, although the decimal point is not printed on the call number.
Thus G112 comes before G3.
