The Antelope Valley Union High School District is geographically Los Angeles County’s largest school district extending from San Bernardino County on the east to Ventura County on the west, to Kern County on the north and the San Gabriel mountains on the south. The District dates to 1912 when thirteen elementary districts unionized to provide a high school. The District serves the educational needs of 9th through 12th grade students residing in approximately 1700 square miles or 45% of the total Los Angeles County area. The AVUHSD operates six comprehensive high schools, an adult school, a series of continuation schools, and a Community Day School program. The sixth comprehensive high school opened in September 1995. Plans are underway to build a new high school within the next few years.

The Antelope Valley area still offers an uncrowded and open landscape for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers of all kinds, and retains much of the charm and serenity of it natural and rural character. The cities of Lancaster and Palmdale are aggressively recruiting
new businesses to provide a solid economic base for the area. Major employers
in the area are manufacturers in the aircraft/ aerospace industry. The Antelope
Valley is the home for many defense contractors. NASA maintains various facilities
at Edwards Air Force Base. Other
major employers in the Valley include local and federal government health
care services, retail stores, school districts, community college, extension
universities and construction contractors.

Take in a baseball game at the newly built Jethawks
Stadium. “The Hangar”, is home to a semi professional baseball
farm team for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Antelope Valley, once home of vast herds of prong-horned antelope and acres of alfalfa is now the busy center of an expanding aerospace industry and home of the space shuttle. Separated from Los Angeles and the Coastal cities of Southern California by the San Gabriel Mountains, the Antelope Valley is located on the southwestern rim of the Greater Mojave Desert in northern Los Angeles County. The Antelope Valley has enjoyed unprecedented growth and prosperity in the last decade. The total population of the Antelope Valley exceeds 300,000.
